There’s a gaping rent control loophole in Ontario that is harming renters, pushing them into debt and poverty. That loophole is the 2018 exemption to new builds. Most rental units in Ontario are protected by a form of rent control. Landlords can only charge up to 2.5% more in rent each year.

This Indigenous Legal Needs Assessment (ILNA) project began in 2019 and continued through the beginning of the COVID-19 global pandemic in 2020. The report identifies some of the legal needs of Indigenous people living in the catchment areas of 11 Northern Ontario community legal clinics and will be helpful in the future planning for services provided by these legal clinics.
